The Largest white diamond ever appears at auction

A pear-shaped white diamond, nicknamed The Rock, weighing 228.31 carat as the largest white diamond ever appear at auction fetched USD $21.9 million (around HKD $172m) in the Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale on 11 May 2022. Although the auctioned price didn’t break the record as hoped, it still fell within the estimation range.

This pear-shaped diamond with G-color and VS1-clarity was graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) came with a letter stating that it is the largest existing D-Z color pear-shaped diamond that they have ever graded. It was mined in South Africa in the early 2000s. The previous record holder of a large size diamond was a 163.41 carat, which sold at Christie’s in Geneva 2017 for USD$33.7million.
