A 37,555 gram massive emerald cluster auctioned as the most expensive single emerald Gemfields ever sold.

The massive emerald cluster, named the Kafubu Cluster, was discovered in Zambia around March 2020. Displaying the most desirable vivid green colour of emerald and typical hexagonal structure, it weighted 37,555gram which equals to 187,775cts. After careful inspection, this cluster was so rare that apart from its huge size, it was said that nearly the whole cluster is made up of emerald, which means there are only a limited of matrix or other minerals contained in the cluster.

A total of 30.8 million revenue was fetched from their latest auction, which included the Kafubu Cluster, according to Gemfields without further information released.

The formation of emeralds requires a precise set of chemicals and a suitable geological condition. The encounter of beryllium and chromium is essential to the formation. However, beryllium as one of the elusive elements on earth must be carried up to the surface by pegmatite, while chromium appears in ultramafic (chromium-bearing rock). It takes several miracles in order to have the two elements come together and form an exquisite emerald.
